Interview of the month: James Dickinson, director of F-Beauty Connect

On his meaningful WW2 heritage, the power of cultural adaptation, and tips to penetrate the French market

1.Hello James, can you present yourself and your business activity?

Of course. I’m James and I am the director of F-Beauty Connect (https://www.f-beautyconnect.fr/) , an agency dedicated to supporting international beauty brands successfully enter and grow in the French and European markets. I often describe myself as someone who has spent most of his professional life building bridges between markets, cultures, and businesses.

I have been working in international business development for more than fifteen years, with a particular focus on cosmetics, beauty, wellness, and healthcare. My career has taken me across Europe and Asia, and I had the opportunity to live and work for many years in China and Hong Kong. Those experiences profoundly shaped the way I approach business today.

Over the years, I have managed distributors, developed international markets, negotiated partnerships, and helped companies expand beyond their domestic borders. What I enjoyed most was always the same thing: helping businesses connect with new opportunities and turning ambitious projects into concrete results.

F-Beauty Connect is a strategic and operational partner for international beauty brands looking to enter France and, more broadly, Europe. We support brands through four key pillars: regulatory affairs, Made in France manufacturing, branding and communication, and sales and distribution development.

Rather than acting as a distributor, we act as a local extension of the brand's team. Our role is to help companies navigate the market, avoid costly mistakes, and build the foundations required for sustainable growth. Entering a new market is rarely just about finding customers; it is about building credibility, visibility, and trust. That is where we create value.

2.You have a British name; you speak with a French accent and you lived for a long time in Asia. So you are the poster boy for multiculturalism! What are any advantages or disadvantages you would like to highlight?

Well, thank you for pointing out the French accent — some of your readers may never have noticed otherwise!

I am, in fact, the third generation of Dickinsons living in France. The Dickinson family originally comes from Liverpool, in the north of England. My grandfather arrived in France during the Second World War and, after the war ended, decided to remain in Normandy.

At the time, he was offered French citizenship and, as was sometimes the custom, the possibility of adopting a more French-sounding first name to facilitate integration. He accepted — although I suspect that the young and beautiful Norman woman he had met shortly before, who would later become my grandmother, may have played a greater role in that decision than administrative convenience!

The irony is that, despite this effort to integrate, my grandparents decided to give all seven of their children distinctly English first names, including my father. The tradition has continued ever since. Today, my daughter and all of her cousins also carry English first names. So while I was born and raised in France, there has always been a small British thread running through our family history. In many ways, that combination of cultures probably influenced my curiosity about the world and my interest in building bridges between different countries, markets, and ways of thinking.

 Living and working across different countries teaches you very quickly that there is rarely a single "right" way of doing business. What may seem obvious in Paris can be interpreted very differently in Shanghai, London, or Seoul. The ability to understand these differences and adapt accordingly is invaluable.

 One of the biggest advantages is the ability to act as a translator between markets—not only linguistically, but culturally. Brands often assume that consumers think the same way everywhere. In reality, expectations, purchasing behaviours, communication styles, and even perceptions of beauty can vary significantly from one market to another.

Multicultural experiences also teach humility. The more countries you work in, the more you realise how much there is still to learn. Curiosity becomes a mindset rather than a skill. You learn to listen more carefully, question your assumptions, and remain open to alternative perspectives.

I have also found that trust is built much faster when people feel genuinely understood.

 For me, multiculturalism is not about being from several places. It is about being comfortable navigating between them.

3.Is it hard for foreign companies to access the French market? What are the key things that they should be aware of?

France has a reputation for being a difficult market to enter, and while certain challenges certainly exist, I think many of them are often misunderstood.

The first misconception concerns regulation. European regulations are demanding, but they are also very structured. With proper guidance and planning, compliance can be managed efficiently and without unnecessary complexity. 

The second misconception concerns investment. Many brands assume they need enormous budgets from day one. In reality, success depends far more on having a clear strategy than on simply spending more money.

The biggest mistake we see, however, is what I call the "copy-paste approach." Brands try to replicate exactly what worked in their home market without adapting their proposition to local expectations. Think Global - Act Local

Positioning is another critical factor. Many brands arrive with a large portfolio of products but without a clear story. If retailers and consumers cannot immediately understand what makes a brand different, gaining traction becomes difficult.

Distribution is often misunderstood as well. Many companies expect distributors to take care of everything—from marketing and brand awareness to commercial development.

 But distributors accelerate sales. They do not create demand.

 Demand comes from brand building, communication, visibility, and consumer engagement. Without those foundations, even the best distributor will struggle.

Successful market entry is ultimately a combination of strategic preparation and disciplined local execution.

4.What advice would you give to companies looking to find the right distributor?

The first piece of advice would be not to start by looking for a distributor.

That may sound surprising coming from someone involved in market development, but many brands focus on distribution before they have clearly defined their positioning, target consumer, or value proposition.

A distributor is not a miracle solution. A distributor can accelerate growth, but it cannot create desirability for a brand that consumers do not yet understand.

The second piece of advice is to focus on quality rather than size. The largest distributor is not necessarily the right distributor. I would much rather work with a highly engaged partner who genuinely understands the category and believes in the brand than with a larger organisation where the brand becomes one product among hundreds.

 Brands should also carefully evaluate whether the distributor's existing portfolio is aligned with their positioning. Distribution is not simply about coverage; it is about coherence.

Another important point is to define shared expectations from the beginning. What are the sales objectives? What marketing support will be provided? Which retail targets are realistic? How will performance be measured?

The most successful partnerships are built around a joint business plan rather than a purchase order. Ultimately, distribution should be viewed as a long-term partnership. The best relationships are those where both parties invest in building the brand together rather than focusing  exclusively on short-term sales.

5.How do you see the global cosmetics industry evolving at the moment and what part will France and the UK play in its development?

I believe we are entering a particularly exciting period for the beauty industry.

Consumers today are more informed than ever, and their expectations continue to rise. They are increasingly looking for products that combine efficacy, scientific credibility, safety, and visible results. As a consequence, we are seeing a significant increase in the technical sophistication of formulations and star actives across all beauty categories.

Several trends are shaping this evolution. Skinification continues to influence haircare and body care. Dermocosmetics are becoming increasingly important, effectively bridging the gap between traditional cosmetics and healthcare. Personalisation, healthy aging, beauty technology, artificial intelligence, and sustainability are all contributing to the transformation of the industry.

Asia continues to play a major role in this evolution. The sheet mask was one of the first major beauty trends imported from Asia. Today, K-Beauty is reshaping European markets through product innovation, highly sophisticated branding, and the global cultural influence of K-Pop. Asian brands are becoming increasingly confident, ambitious, and international.

We are also witnessing significant changes in distribution. Specialist retailers continue to gain importance, dermocosmetic brands are experiencing remarkable growth in pharmacies, and online channels, including marketplaces and social commerce, are becoming increasingly influential.

As for France and the UK, I believe they each bring complementary strengths.

France remains a global reference for formulation expertise, luxury, scientific credibility, and industrial know-how. The country continues to play a central role in product development and manufacturing.

The UK, meanwhile, excels in entrepreneurship, marketing creativity, brand storytelling, and international influence. British brands are often exceptionally agile when it comes to identifying and shaping consumer trends.

Looking ahead, I believe the future of beauty will not be defined by any single country or region. It will increasingly be shaped by collaboration between markets, cultures, and areas of expertise. The brands that succeed will be those capable of combining innovation from one region, manufacturing excellence from another, and consumer insights from across the world.

Second stop on my Asia tour: #LuxePackShanghai 2026 — and it certainly delivered on its promises.


Beyond the strong attendance and vibrant energy throughout the show, this edition was particularly meaningful on a personal level. Returning to Shanghai — a city that remains very close to my heart after more than 10 years living there as an expatriate — felt special. 
This experience was marked by many constructive meetings, exciting discussions around new projects, and the discovery of a wide range of packaging innovations.
One clear takeaway: the rapid expansion of both supply and demand dedicated to the fragrance industry, confirming once again the category’s strong momentum in China and worldwide.

It was a true honor to take part in the very first edition of the Asia Fragrance Festival, held in Kaohsiung, Taiwan on April 11–12. 


This inaugural edition was an undeniable success — not only in terms of inspiring encounters and meaningful conversations, but also through the emergence of concrete projects that are already taking shape. The quality of exchanges and the shared ambition across participants truly highlighted the growing momentum of the fragrance ecosystem in Asia. 
Such enthusiasm and engagement have naturally led to the confirmation of a second edition, already scheduled for April 2027 — a strong signal of the festival’s relevance and future impact. 


I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Dr. Chih-Chieh Hsu and Sam, the organizers of the festival, for their invitation and trust. A special thank you as well to Peter Wu and Judy Wu from Cloud Beauty Innovation Hub for their invaluable support throughout the event and during my stay in Taiwan.

On April 15th, from 15:00 to 15:45, F-Beauty Connect will also participate in an open discussion conference addressing a critical topic for Chinese brands.

This session will focus on bridging the gap between brand vision and retail reality in France. While many brands invest heavily in product development and branding, fewer successfully translate these assets into tangible retail success in Europe.

The discussion will provide:

  • A clear perspective on the expectations of French and European distributors
  • Insights into the most common structural gaps observed in market entry strategies
